The ads are all over the Internet. Sign up for a specific software package and you can watch thousands of channels right over your PC for next to nothing in cost. So, are these offers real or are they just a clever way to part you from your money?

We made it our mission to find out one way or the other. With dozens of different services out there that say they offer hundreds and even thousands of channels for a single payment of as little as $50, the offers sure seemed phony to us. After all, when you compare that $50 to a standard cable bill, it’s a real steal. In fact, it just sounds like a “steal” is all it is.

Considering the fact that some of these offers come from pretty big companies, others from small firms and even those that are blatant scams, we set out to sort through the offers and see which ones – if any – were legitimate. Our goal was to see if any of these services were legitimate and offered quality programming and channels. We also wanted to find out which ones consumers would do best to steer clear from entirely.

To make sure we took a good sampling for our experiment, we selected the 30 most popular services that offer television over the PC. Our testing was very straightforward. We just signed up, downloaded the software and checked out everything each service had to offer.

Here’s what we uncovered.

The Results Overall…

We’re sorry to say that most of the services we checked out just didn’t live up to their promises. Most of the services we looked at only offered low quality shows on a very small display. Interestingly, most of the channels didn’t even come in English. This leads us to this warning: Do your homework before you sign up for a service!

Now, with that precautionary tale out of the way, we did find some decent offerings out there, too. While they were few and far between, they did exist. In fact, we found three services in particular we liked enough to actually talk about.

All three of our top picks deliver a quality that rivals satellite television. We found that the channels came through at 720p to 1080p, which is plenty high enough. Plus, these three also offered tons of channels. When one of these three made a claim about having 3,500 channels in high quality, they actually meant it!

Picture perfect clarity every step of the way is what we found. In fact, the channels come in at 1080p – if your computer monitor is powerful enough. #3 Good Quality - iSoftware TV

Unfortunately, much of the programming is foreign and a lot of the lineup just seems to be there to add numbers to the total.
